HomeSmart Offers a Low-Tech Way to Protect Your Identity

Instead of shredding all those papers with sensitive financial information, you can permanently obscure the information with the HomeSmart Black Out Security Stamper and Pen.  It looks like one of those self-inking return address stampers, but the Black Out stamper uses permanent ink that can’t be erased or washed out to stamp a jumbled pattern [...]

DIY A/C Unit Keeps You Cool in a Heatwave

If you’re living in the U.S., we don’t have to tell you it’s hot outside. Damn hot. Dog Day Afternoon hot. Temperatures are soaring in cities across the country, reaching (and breaking) record highs not seen since the early 20th century. The smartest of us are seeking refuge in the air-conditioned Starbucks. Coughing up the [...]

New software uses facial recognition to defend against prying eyes

Having the right programs and hardware to keep the information on your display safe from prying eyes is never a bad idea, and new software from Oculis Labs offers a very interesting take on how to do just that. It's called PrivateEye, and it utilizes facial recognition to automatically pixelate the contents of your display when you look away.

If you step away from your system and someone else decides to sit down and poke around, PrivateEye will present a confusing jumble of garbled text. It'll even notify you if someone tries to peek over your shoulder -- and display a picture of your peeping Tom, throw up an alert, or sound an alarm.

Check out the video embed after the break, and share your thoughts in the comments!

Samsung Series 3 laptops crop up on Amazon, 12.1-inch model still AWOL

Samsung's Series 3 laptops deliver more performance-per-dollar than the ultra-thin Series 9, at the expense of -- well, ultra-thinness. That said, the 12.1-inch model hardly struck as megalithic when we went hands-on last month, and we're keen to see it emerge from pre-order status. For those who can't wait, or who prefer a bigger screen and keyboard, then a couple of larger siblings have just become available via third-party retailers at Amazon. There's a 5.5-pound, 15.6-inch variant with an i3 processor, 4GB of DDR3 and a 500GB HDD going for $590. Alternatively, you can pick up a 14-incher for $60 more, with mainly the same specs but a slightly bigger 640GB HDD. As for us, we're holding out for that elusive baby brother, for the sake of its superior i5 processor and our aging knees.

Google Gives Android Fragmentation a Giant Thumbs Up [Android]

One of the most immediate (and valid) criticisms of the Android bonanza is its fragmentation problem. Too many versions! It's confusing! So what could Google do to rein in the software panoply? Allow multiple versions of apps? Hmm. More »

Mozilla Messaging reintegrates with Labs, unifies focus on Web-based communication

Mozilla Messaging, citing Mozilla's increased focus on Web-borne communications, will be reintegrating with Mozilla Labs.

The Messaging subsidiary was formed in 2008 to focus on Thunderbird, but given Mozilla Labs' current focus on identity and contact management, it now makes sense for the groups to be merged. Thunderbird will be unaffected by the change -- some URLs might change, but that's it -- and presumably Messaging's F1 and Raindrop will thrive in the Labs playground.

What this means for the end user -- for the hundreds of millions of Firefox users -- is that the next big additions will be communication- and messaging-oriented. Contacts and F1 will be almost certainly be baked into Firefox 5 or 6, both of which will be released this year -- and, who knows, there might be something else even more exciting up Mozilla Labs' sleeve!

Purported shot of Nikon's mirrorless mount surfaces, camera remains shy

We've already heard plenty of talk about Nikon's forthcoming entry into the world of mirrorless cameras, and it looks like we now have our first real peek at the actual goods. Unfortunately, it's just a look at the mount, not the whole camera (said to be codenamed X810), but it does appear to be the real deal (and was apparently removed from the Chinese forum it surfaced on, Xitek, at Nikon's request). Details on the camera itself are otherwise still fairly light, but it certainly sounds like Nikon has some grand plans for it -- the company's previously boasted that it wants to create a whole new market.
